Play

The Live Oak Education Foundation believes all kids thrive, both physically and emotionally, when they experience Positive Play. We have helped improve many play spaces, offering funds toward “Gaga Ball” courts at our elementary schools and donating to LEO’s Haven, the county’s first inclusive playground. We donated $10,000 to the new Shoreline Middle School soccer complex—a valuable resource for youth across the county. We also provide annual budgets for recess equipment and support the Playworks recess curriculum used at Live Oak elementary schools, which incorporates fun activities that are structured to deter bullying.

In 2021, we launched a campaign to replace and upgrade the gym floor at Shoreline Middle School. After 25 years and thousands of kids playing on it, the floor is worn and damaged. The gym serves 450 Shoreline students annually during PE, lunchtime intramural games, and 9 after school sports teams. The gym is also rented after school and during summers by local youth recreational groups (basketball, volleyball, and wrestling). In total, 2,000 Santa Cruz County youth are served by the Shoreline gym on an annual basis.

Our fundraising goal is $80,000 and we’re over halfway there! This project is being featured in the Santa Cruz Gives end-of-year giving campaign.
